Fisher-Price Backyardigan's Sing 'N Strum Guitar Review

The Fisher Price Backyardigans Sing `n Strum Guitar is a battery operated guitar, plastic in construction, small, and lightweight. It can be used by most any toddler, age one and older. It has sounds that are activated by pressing any one of seven different objects on the body of the guitar. One simple press of the object starts the sound; another press of the same object ends the sound. In these respects, this guitar is pretty much like other children's play instruments.
My girl's like the many colors on The Fisher Price Backyardigans Sing `n Strum Guitar and they also like the sound effects. But from an adult perspective, this guitar is a little lacking when compared to others. The greatest problem I have with this guitar is the lack of variety with the tunes. There is only one complete tune available, and it isn't a well- known tune or song. It is just this little ditty telling kids they gotta hold on tight, hold tight, gotta hold on tight, hold tight..., etc. There isn't much to it, and it's very repetitious- again, from an adult perspective. The other buttons produce either a single sound effect or a couple of words. It's true that, if the string area is pressed, there are fifteen different songs, but these songs are only the voice of one of the Backyardigan characters who then follows the tune of a well- known song with a string of la, la, la, la, la. The actual words of the song are not sung. Fisher Price could have made this guitar better by including actual songs with words.
The most annoying components of this guitar are: The blue, note- shaped tab that makes a loud, annoying sound; and the lack of sufficient volume control. There is a yellow- shaped star, just above the strings, that is intended to control the volume. But it doesn't do a very good job and, worst of all, its right there where youngsters can turn it. This is a flaw in the design- it really belongs on the back side of the guitar, away from a toddler's fingertips. Instead, all you get on the back of the guitar is an On/Off switch. The sound of the Fisher Price Backyardigans Sing `n Strum Guitar is rather loud, and thus it could benefit by having a volume control knob to reduce the decibels.
Looking at all of the pros and cons, however, I still recommend this guitar. Children enjoy it and if you asked my little ones for their opinion, they would both give this guitar a thumbs- up recommendation for fun and entertainment. It isn't the best child's guitar on the market, but it does have enough positive qualities to make it a good addition to your child's instrument collection.
